Chili Powder

Chili powder is a funny thing. It is called for in so many recipes. Taco seasoning, chili seasoning, and other dishes that require warmth.

It seems funny that those seasonings (basically spice blends) would require yet another spice blend added to it.

This got me thinking…what exactly is chili powder? Why can’t we just make it ourselves? Low and behold, we can. The beauty is that I can now adjust my chili powder to suit my taste and make my dishes even better.

Chili powder is not traditionally “spicey”, it is warm. For a long time I thought it was made from spicy chilis. It actually isn’t. It is just a blend of warm spices like cumin and paprika that builds warmth, but not heat.

This recipe will give you a great base chili powder. Adjust the seasoning to make it perfect for you. Then add it to recipes that call for chili powder.
